Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion Clinic Brisbane

An innovative treatment designed to remove dead cells and improve overall tone, microdermabrasion can brighten your complexion, reduce the appearance of fine lines and sun damage, and help reduce breakouts. Most often applied for facial treatments, it can be used on the chest, back and hands.

Like any new cosmetic procedure, it’s common to have questions or concerns about your treatments and plan. With an in-person consultation at Herstellen Clinic in Brisbane, our dedicated team can help you to look further into this rejuvenating treatment option and highlight some of its beneficial results.

What is microdermabrasion and what is it used for?

An excellent, non-invasive procedure designed to remove dead cells and unclog congested areas, microdermabrasion can help reduce breakouts, minimise the appearance of fine lines, and address sun damage concerns.

Microdermabrasion treatment is one of the key services relied on to bring back a healthy, natural glow, restoring the skin to its more youthful and smooth appearance.

Am I a suitable candidate?

You may be a suitable candidate if you experience acne breakouts, have oily skin, notice uneven skin tone or texture or are beginning to see signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles. On the other hand, you may not be a suitable candidate for treatment if you have extremely sensitive skin, have any rashes or active infections in the treatment area, or are prone to cold sores. Before your treatment, your clinician will discuss whether or not microdermabrasion is the right treatment option for you.

The benefits of microdermabrasion

Just one microdermabrasion session can work wonders for skin! However, especially with regular treatments spaced out over about four to eight weeks, this treatment option can work towards transforming the health and appearance of your skin.

While treating your specific skin concerns, microdermabrasion has a variety of added benefits to help you achieve healthier skin overall!

  • Targets acne breakouts
  • Unclogs pores and deeply cleans the skin
  • Reduces common signs of ageing
  • Creates even skin tone
  • Improves skin texture, creating smoother skin
  • Improves the appearance of skin pigmentation
  • Helps to build stronger, firmer and healthier skin
  • Creates a beautiful, youthful glow

The microdermabrasion treatment:
What to expect

Firstly, your tailored consultation will involve your clinician discussing the benefits of the treatment and how it can target your individual skin concerns. One of our experienced clinicians will assess the condition of your skin and recommend microdermabrasion as a treatment option, if it seems to be the right fit for you. Generally, from normal to dry, oily or combination skin, microdermabrasion can suit most types.

Before we get started, we will thoroughly and gently cleanse your skin to remove any dirt or impurities on the surface. During your microdermabrasion treatment, a granular solution will be applied to the desired treatment area, and used to exfoliate away dead skin cells. Unlike over-the-counter kits, the Herstellen Clinic solutions are applied with specialised equipment to provide clinical results that you cannot achieve at home!

We will then apply some calming ingredients to the treated area, to aid in the restoration and repair of the skin. In total, the treatment typically takes about 20 minutes to perform, but the total treatment time can differ from candidate to candidate as it will depend on the area being treated, the condition of your skin and your goals for the treatment.

  • Is microdermabrasion good for acne?
With the ability to target and remove congestion, microdermabrasion treatment may reduce the appearance of breakouts and blackheads, cleaning the skin and creating a smoother appearance.
  • Does microdermabrasion hurt?
Like an intensive, rejuvenating facial, microdermabrasion should be a tolerable treatment. Most people report that it is not painful. If you have any concerns or contact allergies that may increase the risk of sensitivity or a reaction, please raise this with your practitioner prior to your treatment!

Microdermabrasion aftercare and results

After your treatment, you will likely notice visible results right away and see these extended as the following month progresses. Immediately after treatment, you may notice that your skin is slightly red and can feel more sensitive than usual, but this is normal and will subside as the skin heals, typically within about 10 days.

While each client and their complexion is unique, most patients report noticeable benefits for several weeks. After several weeks, the strong exfoliating benefits will have shed dead cells, to unveil healthier, less exposed areas.

As for aftercare steps, it is recommended that you stay extra hydrated and avoid the use of products with active ingredients post-treatment including Vitamin C, retinol, and BHA/AHAs. Although use of these products may be resumed after 24-48 hours, it is important to use products with an SPF rating of at least 30 (always!).

You will receive more information on caring for your skin after treatment, with aftercare steps tailored to the condition of your skin and personal factors such as health history and lifestyle. Generally, you should keep your face clean with a gentle cleanser, and retain your skin’s softness by applying a high quality moisturiser.

To maintain your results in the long term, you may like to schedule routine treatments. How often you have your microdermabrasion treatments will depend on the condition of your skin and your desired results, but generally, treatments should be spaced out by about four to eight weeks. One of our clinicians can advise you on how often to undergo microdermabrasion treatment, developing a personalised treatment plan.

Side effects

Microdermabrasion is associated with very minor side effects, with downtime being considered minimal and most reactions from the skin being natural and short-term.

After treatment, the skin may become reddened and sensitive, but this is to be expected and will subside soon after the treatment. More moderate reactions can include swelling and tenderness, but these side effects should subside within hours after your appointment. Longer term side effects can include minor bruising, minor abrasions and increased sun sensitivity, all of which should naturally subside and can be managed with the right aftercare steps.

If performed on candidates who are prone to cold sores, the treatment may trigger an outbreak. Be sure to let your clinician know if you have had cold sores in the past during your consultation.

Rarer complications can include changes in skin colour (such as darkening from sun exposure), infection or scarring. However, these complications can be avoided by following the necessary aftercare advice.
